Alpha Chi Omega's National Philanthropy is Domestic Violence Awareness. The Alpha Chi Omega Foundation supports educational programs for victims of domestic violence as well as hands-on support at the community level. Grants go to various agencies across the nation providing services to victims as well as providing development and implementation of educational programs for members.
At the Sigma chapter, we work closely with the Domestic Violence Intervention Program of Iowa City. All of the proceeds from our fall and spring philanthropy events go directly back to DVIP, and many of our sisters are regular volunteers for the organization.
1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men will be victims of severe violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Alpha Chi Omega believes in fostering healthy relationships as well as bringing awareness to the prevelance of domestic violence in our community.
Alpha Chi Omega hosted our fall philanthropy event, "A Chi O, Cupcakes to Go" at Molly's Cupcakes during October of this year. People could stop by purchase a cupcake of their choice decorated with purple frosting, in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). All of the proceeds went directly to The Domestic Violence Intervention Program in Iowa City.
For this year's Spring Philanthropy, we hosted our first-ever "Let's Taco 'Bout It" taco bar at Old Brick Church where we sold churros and El Patron tacos to the community. Alpha Chi raised $4,133 for our local DVIP shelter. We are SO thankful to everyone who made this possible!
Besides our two philanthropy events, we also celebrate Healthy Relationships Week. This year we held several events, including a Greek educational event on what a healthy relationship is, "Donut Let Love Hurt," where the we passed out free donuts, and a PACE (Promote Alpha Chi Everyday) event on the T. Anne Cleary Walkway where we passed out red carnations, red lollipops, and statistics about domestic violence.
Healthy Relationships Week is celebrated by Alpha Chi Omega chapters all across the country, and is a week we can all come together to advocate for healthy relationships and increase awareness for domestic violence.
